During the 1850s, Kensett’s imagery evolved away from sweeping panoramas to a quieter, more contemplative approach that infused his work with a precise and meditative focus on the landscape. In this sparsely composed horizontal canvas, he portrayed the famously scenic site in New York’s Adirondack Mountains with attention to the reflective properties of light as it glints in the background off the still waters between what is likely Black Mountain, on the left, and Deer Leap, at right, as seen from Sabbath Day Point.
