A long time ago when I was very young in my twenties, I dyed my hair red, it was the most amazing color ever. Now that I'm in my 60's, it's simpler for me to be more natural, but I will never forget that beautiful color.

So for all the people who get that color of hair at birth, I'm absolutely in love with the carrot orange coloring especially with freckles. I haven't painted freckles on my portraitures yet, but that is next.

My choices in painting are highly speculative if not down-right hypocritical when it comes to boozy bottles. I even have a collection of wine paintings in progress, so why do I paint bottles of wine and cocktail concoctions, and empty bottles? I have to reflect back on my childhood for that answer.

When I was being raised in the 1970's, there was a common theme in some homes and that was a small bar with all kinds of bottles and beautiful crystal glasses and usually a father not so far away with a delicious aromatic pipe close by.

I remember the crystal glasses in every home. Each home had a different style of glassware and some were colorful, and some were clear glasses of all shapes and sizes. I never learned what kind of glass went with a certain type of cocktail, but I learned that well-kept homes had a section of the home known as a "bar" and they were usually beautiful.

One of the strangest of things people say to me about my booze paintings is that they don't drink... and why would I care? I don't drink either to any degree, I really don't even like water...my preference is for good fattening food. So the next time you pass by a bar, I wonder if you'll notice how beautiful bars are?

Why do I create art? It’s a question I’ve been asked a lot, and one that I’ve asked myself. It’s not an easy question to answer, because for some, art is a way to showcase their talent and training.

Personally, I create art because it’s a way for me to connect with my emotions. I’m not traditionally trained, so my art is often emotionally ambiguous. I think it’s important to create art that reflects our emotions, whatever they may seem to reflect on canvas.


Painting finds me in a very meditative process. When I’m in the moment, everything else disappears and I’m completely present in the act of creating. Art also allows me to communicate with others. Even though my work may be emotionally ambiguous, it often resonates with others on a personal level. I’ve had people tell me that one of my paintings spoke to them in a way that they couldn’t quite articulate. That’s the beauty of art – it’s subjective and open to interpretation.

To create art is simply a part of who I am. It’s always been a form of self-expression for me, even from a young age.

Have you ever looked out your window at a big empty city and thought, how beautiful and moody? I love big cities especially when everyone's sleeping.

After working with oils, I finally decided that showing a little canvas is okay and is actually awesome like the picture to the left. That bit of white in this contemporary floral is plain ole canvas showing through.

Acrylic paint needs layers and when the paint doesn't fill the canvas, it looks very unfinished. How odd then is it that with oils, the colors so bold and colorful, pop more with a bit of white canvas showing?

The original is drying now and I'm not sure if I'll add another coat.

I probably will though as I have no issue covering up one masterpiece with another. The joy of painting is like that with me.
